HARDWOOD BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS OFFICIALS CODE OF ETHICS

Officials at a Hardwood Basketball Tournament are participants in the athletic development and college exposure of Boys & Girls Grades 2nd-12th. As such, you must exercise a high level of self-discipline, independence and responsibility. The purpose of this Code is to establish guidelines for ethical standards of conduct for all Hardwood officials.

  • Officials shall master both the rules of the game and the mechanics necessary to enforce the rules, and shall exercise authority in an impartial, firm and controlled manner.

  • Officials shall work with each other and their tournament directors in a constructive and cooperative manner.

  • Officials shall uphold the honor and dignity of the profession in all interaction with players, coaches, our tournament staff, our tournament directors, your officiating crew, spectators, fans, and the general public.

  • Officials shall avoid the use of alcohol and tobacco products beginning with the arrival at the competition site until departure following the completion of the contest. Use of such products will result in an immediate release of duties.

  • Officials shall take reasonable steps to educate themselves in the recognition of emergency conditions that might arise during the course of competition. For any further information on the emergency procedures at your facility, see your site director.

  • Officials shall maintain an ethical approach while participating in forums, chat rooms, and all forms of social media.

Your Mission

Your mission is to allow two teams to play so that neither team has an unfair advantage. The role of officials is to enforce these rules and those set forth at our Hardwood Basketball Tournaments. Mechanics & Professionalism are the necessary tool that places officials in the proper position to enforce the rules & have a smooth and successful weekend at any Hardwood Tournament.

Quick To-Do's Before Each Game

  1. Arrive at the game site early. Never rush to a game. Allow ample time to get there well in advance of game time. We require officials show up ready and dressed no later than 30 Minutes before Tip-Off

  2. Hold a thorough yet brief pregame conference. Do it even if you’ve worked with your partners before.

  3. Attend to administrative duties early. (Find Score & Book Keepers; Get Players Listed in the Official Book) Allow enough time to fix problems.

  4. Dress in proper, clean uniform, and in conjunction with the dress code. Look sharp and you’re off on the right foot!

  5. Inspect the playing area. Correct potential hazards before the game. Ask a member of the tournament staff should you need assistance.

  6. Conduct a brief meeting with team captains or coaches. Tell the captains that they are the leaders of the team and may be called on to fulfill that role. Keep it brief. We want to keep the game safe for all players, coaches, and spectators.

  7. Observe players during pregame practice. Opponents occasionally try to intimidate each other before a game. Do not Allow This.

  8. Relax. If you appear tense and nervous, the players will recognize it.

  9. There are likely multiple games scheduled in a row with few breaks, as it is a tournament. Come prepared for a full weekend of officiating.
